# Overview

The monstrous world is cosmopolitan and diverse, as a direct result of most of
the peoples of the monstrous world coming together in refuge from the
apocalyptic assault of the Megaliths. In order to model out that rich
complexity, the Hanging Towers leverages the [Ancestry &
Culture][ancestry-and-culture] rules system, which makes a rule distinction
between what you born as (ancestry) and how you were brought up (culture).

Following are the variou ancestries which are unique to Oshanal, although any of
the ancestries and cultures depicted in [main book][ancestry-and-culture] are
permitted as well.

Overview


# Aevar

Long before the Hanging Towers rose into the sky, other peoples had created a
home for themselves. There were cloud giants known as the Yaganu, several
spirit courts of wind and storm, and the winged people known as the Aevar.
Making their homes in the sky out of cloud and elaborate gossamer crystal,
these heavenly cultures were, at one time, pervasive across the cloudscapes
of the twilight world.

Of the original sky people, the Aevar were the first to directly assimilate into
the Epicentral Empire, becoming the de facto envoys for the Eruvenian people to
the rest of the cloud kingdoms. Today, they have become firmly entrenched in the
political diaspora of Epicenter. They are so intermixed that many of their largest
sky cities have gradually become Tower States, themselves.

Aevar are tall, long-limbed, slender people with large, almond-shaped full-iris
eyes. They weigh next to nothing, having hollow bones and next to no body fat.
Instead of hair, they have plumes of feathers with distinct color patterns. Upon
their backs, Aevar have two tremendous wings that fold neatly into a cloak-like
arrangement when not in use.

## Winged Elf Ancestral Traits

You are a winged elf, one of the long-lived sky people who dwell in the sky
cities of your world. Your ancestry gives you a variety of traits which you
share in common with all winged elves.

**Age.** Winged elves grow and mature in parallel with most humanoid ancestries,
reaching physical maturity at around 16 years of age. However, winged elves live
very long, averaging at least twelve centuries, but occasionally up to thirty.
Because of this breadth of history, winged elves consider adolescence to be a
period of around a century, meaning adulthood generally begins at around 120
years of age.

**Size.** Winged elves are tall, with long limbs and slender frames. They tend
to reach seven feet in height, sometimes up to eight. Your size is Medium.

**Speed.** Your base walking speed is 25 feet.

**Sky-adapted.** Winged elves have dwelled in sky cities for all of known
eternity. This has left them uniquely adapted to the sky world in ways other
ancestries often (but not always) envy. You gain the following traits:

- Your feathers give you a nice buffer of insulation that leaves you unphased by
  most cold temperatures. You have resistance to cold damage.
- Your bones are hollow, giving you a vulnerability to bashing damage.
- You need less oxygen to survive. On the upside, this means you can hold your
  breath for longer, a base of 5 minutes + 2 minutes per point of Constitution
  modifier. On the downside, you suffer the poisoned condition when you imbibe
  alcohol.

**Exacting Vision.** Winged elves have incredible eye-sight, perceiving minute
or distant details with ease. You have proficiency in the Perception skill, and
you make all vision-related checks with advantage. You can see in dim light
within 120 feet as though it were bright light, and you see in darkness as if it
were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

**Wings.** You have a flying speed of 30 feet. To use this speed, you can't be
wearing medium or heavy armor.

# Ahunjara

Old cousins of the proud Kotenoei people, the Ahunjara dwell in the arctic
continent known as Blackmoon. A nomadic people who follow the migratory patterns
of arctic creatures, the Ahunjara have gradually become acclimated to the
sub-zero temperatures and the harsh, scarce climate of the frozen north.

The Ahunjara, like the Kotenoei, carry a long oral tradition and prize the art
of storytelling as a vital cultural hallmark. They, too, knew of the dark secret
of the true gods, having carried with them countless stories of trickster gods
gaining footholds into unsuspecting worlds through false names, only to devour
those wolrds. As a result of this mature history of lore, the Ahunjara knew the
secret to undoing Ceremanthus, the Blasting Void, rendering him vulnerable to
the Ebonglaive, making him the first of the monstrous gods to be imprisoned.

Centuries later, it was another Ahunjara who betrayed Ebonglaive, destroying its
Majestry and sending it crashing into the mountains below, freeing the void god
anew.

The Ahunjara are a broad, powerfully built people. They've grown very well
adapted to the northern ices, becoming thicker with fatty tissues, insulating
enough to allow them to swim in the waters of the northern seas without any
discomfort. Their forms are thick with white hair, their skin is often cobalt
blue or slate blue, and they have two large tusks which protrude from their jaw
adjacent to their mouth.

## Arctic Orc Ancestral Traits

Arctic orcs are a semi-aquatic people, adapted to a carnivorous life of
predation in the harsh climates of the arctic world. You have the following
traits.

**Age.** Arctic orcs reach adulthood at 14 years, and live to be up to 80 years
old.

**Size.** Arctic orcs stand 8 feet tall on average and are corded with powerful
muscles, and even heavier still with a thick layer of insulating blubber. You
weigh between 500 to 800 pounds. Your size is Medium.

**Speed.** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

**Darkvision.** You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were
bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color
in darkness, only shades of gray.

**Arctic Adapted.** You've become very well suited to the frozen world. You are
resistant to cold damage, and automatically succeed on checks required to endure
frigid water. Snow and slippery ice are normal terrain for you. Finally, due to
a thick layer of insulating fat, you are resistant to bludgeoning damage and have
advantage on checks to resist poisoning.

**Near Amphibious.** Arctic orcs hunt on the snowy lands and in the frozen seas,
and can go an incredibly long time between breaths, allowing them to hunt game
far under the seas of their frigid home. You are able to hold your breath for a
number of hours equal to your Constitution modifier + your Proficiency bonus.
Once this time has passed, you are subject to drowning and asphyxiation rules as
normal.

**Powerful Build.** You count as one size larger when determining your carrying
capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

# Celebrene

In the heart of the Veghrinaad, there rests a strange, and ancient tower known
as the Godspire. Entering the tower is to step into another world, a place
larger on the inside than outside, and ascending the tower is said to take a
pilgrim to the heavens themselves. Though none truly understand where the
Godspire came from, each of the Hanging Towers were carved to some degree to
replicate its strange design.

In the last age, or sometime before, there was a great war, where the Oravenian
elves of Meneilas laid siege to the great tower in order to gain entry into the
heavens. In its defense, the Godspire created the celebrene, large crystal
golems with glittering angelic stars for hearts. These solemn guardians defended
the tower without rest, until the Oravenians were turned away, and afterward
they fell dormant and began the long vigil at the perimeter of the great spire.

Ages came and passed, and the Godspire mostly faded into myth, until the day
came when the Qeruborim magi lit the first of the Hanging Towers. Without
warning or explanation, the celebrene began to silently arrive and stage a
defense of the nascent tower. Largely because of their unexpected arrival, the
Eruvenian armies successfully defended the tower and the Qeruborim lit it up
with their ley magic, sending it into the sky and signaling the end of the
Megalithic apocalypse.

Today, the celebrene are commonplace amongst the sky people. Mostly, they are
inert, silent guardians, taking up positions where they see fit on the Towers
and then falling into a dim torpor. However, some chose to stay lit, and
assimilate with the teeming refugees of the Spinning Cage.

## Star Golem Ancestral Traits

**Age.** Star golem do not age, and are not, strictly speaking, born. Similarly,
they do not die: if their body is destroyed, they claim that they reincarnate in
the starlit heavens, their furnace heart installed in a new crystalline shape.
Following that, they can choose to reemerge, but the trek down the great tower
of the stars is so long, and so arduous, it can take them years to return to
their station.

**Size.** Star golem are often of great size, their crystalline forms standing 7
to 8 feet in height. Although most are unique in shape, many are broad, with a
strangely large top-half and long arms. Your size is Medium.

**Speed.** Star golem are not known for being quick. Your base walking speed is
20 feet.

**Star-speakers.** Star golem do not have vocal chords and are unable to speak
any language except the star-tongue, a weird language of resonant chimes.
Although able to understand many languages, the only way to understand a star
golem speaker is to learn the star-tongue.

**Dim Torpor.** When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in
an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, your body is
inert, but your star heart may disconnect from your body. You are not
unconscious in this state, and can see or hear as normal, but you are
incorporeal, and may not speak at all, or physically interact with the world.
While in a torpor, your star heart may not travel more than 120 feet from your
body.

**Crystalline.** Due to being wrought of starfire and crystal, you do not need
to eat, drink, or breathe in order to survive. You are immune to disease, and
you have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, as well as a
resistance to poison damage.

# Eruvenian

The imperial line of the Epicentral Empire consists mostly of those with an
Eruvenian ancestry. In the last age, the Eruvenians controlled most of the face
of Oshanal, and this positioned them to retain their power when the first of the
Hanging Towers were first raised.

Today, the Epicentral Empire of the Eruvenian people is in decline, with the
many cultures of the Tower States naturally fragmenting as the people of the
monstrous world grow and change. However, the Eruvenians still bring up their
children teaching of their powerful heritage, which they believe gives them
inherent sovereignty over the people of Oshanal.

## Imperial Elf Ancestral Traits

Imperial elves are a people who have come to expect the prevalence and, for lack
of a better term, natural supremacy, of elvenkind. They have long enjoyed a
mostly uncontested control of the world where they dwell, and to some degree
they have actually earned that control (or at least defended it). As an imperial
elf you have the following traits:

**Age.** Although imperial elves reach physical maturity at around sixteen years
of age, imperial elven people are long-lived and tend to live for hundreds, if
not thousands of years. The average imperial elf lives up to 900 years of age,
but this varies considerably: a truly healthy imperial elf could last up to 2000
years through a combination of cultural, mystic, and biological advantage.

**Size.** Imperial elves are not particularly large, but they are often tall. A
typical imperial elf will range from 6 to 7 feet tall, with a slender frame.
Your size is Medium.

**Speed.** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

**Twilight Vision.** As an old ancestry from the last era, imperial elves have
developed a sharp twilight and dim light vision. You can see in dim light within
60 feet of you as though it were bright light, and you see in darkness as if it
were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

**Keen Senses.** You have proficiency in the Perception skill.

**Trance.** Imperial elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply,
remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. This is referred to as a “trance”.
While meditating, your mind briefly unspools into the greater sorcerous
consciousness of the cosmos, providing you with strange mystic curiosities to
reflect on when you arouse. After resting in this way, you gain the same
benefits that other humanoids do from 8 hours of sleep.


Imperial elves, the Eruvenians have conquered, destroyed, and again saved the monstrous world over the ages.

# Galactine

In the last age, the Galactine were a spacefaring race of small,
dragonfly-winged people. Because of this, there were a few colonies of Galactine
traveling in space when their home world was devoured by Qetamoch, the Thirsting
Light. Today, the Galactine are refugees in the Epicentral Empire, seeking to
rebuild their lost culture however they can.

Quick allies to the Qeruborim, the Galactine have ingratiated themselves to the
Epicentral Empire through generous allocation of their sophisticated knowledge
of ley technology. Their insights were pivotal in the overall engineering of the
Hanging Towers, making the structures mobile instead of stationary: large
luminous vessels, similar to the ones the Galactine arrived in.

Small, with compound eyes and iridescent dragonfly wings, the Galactine are an
enigmatic people, walking a fine line between brilliant and sometimes arrogant
enlightenment and humble gratitude for their opportunity to salvage their
endangered cultures.

## Star Gnome Ancestral Traits

Your star gnome ancestry grants you the following traits.

**Age.** Star gnomes mature at the same rate humans do, and reach adulthood at
around 40 years. Star gnomes are long-lived, living until between 350 and 500
years of age on average.

**Size.** Galactine are slight people, standing 3 feet heigh on average. Your
size is Small.

**Speed.** Your base walking speed is 20 feet.

**Compound Eyes.** Your eyes are compound eyes, designed to perceive far more
than the standard visible spectrum of light. You see in dim light within 120
feet of you as though it were bright light, and you see in utter darkness as
if it were dim light. You can easily discern color in darkness.

Because of how they see the world, star gnomes tend to congregate at places of
magical power, which they perceive as more naturally beautiful: places like the
Towers themselves, anchored to the ley lines of the broken world, are an ultraviolet
wonder that many star gnomes are drawn to.

**Hyper-aware.** You have a quick mind and react to even mild stimuli on an almost
instinctive level. You have advantage on Initiative checks.

**Wings.** You have a flying speed of 30 feet. To use this speed, you can't be
wearing medium or heavy armor.

Galactine


## Guargolan

Wreathed in the impenetrable mists of the Gorgon Bay, deep within the sunken
gulf of the Pit, the Children of the Ghost Light dwell. The guargolan, chitinous
and alien, hold their grim courts with the glittering starlight demons, in their
ominous cities of tarnished brass.

Deeper still, the roads of the pit thicken with these brass structures until at
last one reaches the great sunken city of Old Ora, the lost palatial temple city
of the extinct elves of Meneilas. Here, the guargolan have laid their seat of
power, a council of immortals in blatant service to the star devourer Qetamoch,
forever may she reign.

## Devil Elf Ancestral Traits

Devil elves are a curious ancestry, having become something different than
living in the continual baleful radiance of the City of Brass, yet not quite
dead or even undead. You gain the following traits.

**Age.** Devil elves do not reproduce, and neither do they die of old age. Many
are ancient beyond reckoning. Yet, the strange lights of the cities of brass
deepen knowledge past comprehension, and many of the devil elves have long
abandoned their old memories in the pursuit of more and more magical knowledge.

**Size.** Devil elves are not necessarily impressive in stature, despite the
striking appearance of their gleaming chitinous frames, they stand somewhere
between 5 and 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium.

**Speed.** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

**Darkvision.** You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as though it
were bright light, and you see in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t
discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

**Profane Transformation.** If devil elves were humanoid once, that time has
long past. Your creature type is Aberration.

**Glimmering Chitin.** You are resistant to fire, radiant, and necrotic damage.
Any attempt to target you with a ray spell is done with disadvantage.

**Trance.** Devil elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply,
remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. This is referred to as a “trance”.
While meditating, your mind opens entirely to the Thirsting Light of Qetamoch,
where it is scoured to its abstract atoms and rebuilt entirely in each passing
moment. After meditating in this way, you gain the same benefits that other
humanoids do from 8 hours of sleep.


Devil elves, the Guargolan traded their mortal lives for magical knowledge, succumbing to the terrible vast lore of the goddess of magic, Qetamoch.

# Kaithancor

The Kaithancor are a brutal, violent people who live mostly solitary nomadic
lives, roaming the equally brutal and violent peripheries of the Nazoth Ridge in
old Meneilas. Very few have encountered the Kaithancor and survived, and none
know of any Kaithancor settlement or culture to speak of. They seem primarily
driven by their primeval nature, and those who know of them suspect that they
lost whatever vestige of civilization they may have once known to the terrible
plague of Amon-Nazoth's Judging Dream.

Though no one can point exactly to the origin of the Kaithancor (in fact, even
the Kaithancor cannot do this), there are records of a company of Eruvenian
legions lost in the war with the monstrous divine thousands of years back. There
were a few distinct families in these legions, and some Kaithancor bear names
which are strikingly similar.

Kaithancor are antisocial to the point of violence, mistrusting most everyone by
default, and revolting the rest with their way of life. Though not disgusting in
nature, many Kaithancor are cannibals, and it is common that a Kaithancor has
risen to prominence by dining on the still-beating hearts of their rivals.

Despite all of this monstrous behavior, the Kaithancor are legends of a sort to
those who know of them: it is said that the Kaithancor have succumbed to and
recovered from the corruption of the monstrous divine, and so they are now, in a
sense, immune to the corrosive influence of the terrible peripheries. Many
scholars agree that if this is true, the secret to reclaiming the monstrous
wilds of Oshanal lie somewhere within the mostly lost lore of the fearsome
Kaithancor.

## Tyrant Elf Ancestral Traits

As a tyrant elf, your ancestry grants you the following traits.

**Age.** Tyrant elves mature at around 16 years of age, and live for centuries
(unless slain by a rival, of course), sometimes spanning up to 700 years in age.

**Size.** Tyrant elves are taut with muscle, their angular frames spanning from
6 to 7 feet in height. Your size is Medium.

**Speed.** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

**Darkvision.** You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were
bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color
in darkness, only shades of gray.

**Aggressive.** As a bonus action, you can move up to your speed toward an enemy
of your choice that you can see or hear. You must end this move closer to the
enemy than you started.

**Claws.** Your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed
strikes. If you hit with them, you can deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your
Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed
strike. In addition, your claws give you a climbing speed of 20 feet.

Kaithancor


## Kotenoei

The Kotenoei are a cosmopolitan collection of clans that populate and explore
the Crystalline Archipelago that spirals outward from the permanent magical
storm known as the Whorl. Long ago, as the Eruvenian Empire conquered and
colonized much of the known parts of Oshanal, the Kotenoei were the only people
to truly hold out against Imperial conquest. Eventually, desperate to win out
against the proud Noeian people, the Emperor attempted to summon the true gods
themselves, and broke eternity.

Because of this bitter, millennia-long conflict, when the Eruvenian people
established the first of the Hanging Towers, the Kotenoei were abandoned to the
flooded, monster-infested surface world to die. Instead, they met the challenge
and rose above it, becoming firmly engrained with the monstrous world and
adapting to it. Today, the Kotenoei are a formidable people once again, and they
are almost everywhere in the surface world.

The Kotenoei are a powerfully spiritual people, fully believing in the interior
spirits of all things, and seeking some path of rapport or survival with the
world itself. When the world changed, they sought to match it, and largely
succeeded. Their history is one powerful survival story after another, where the
Noeian clans are met with an insurmountable existential threat, only to gather a
great Council of Matrons, and in the gathering discover a new way to weather, or
tame, whichever titan threatens their life: an Imperial titan, or an actual
titan, it has not yet mattered.

## Island Orc Ancestral Traits

Your island orc ancestry grants you the following traits.

**Age.** Island orcs reach adulthood at 14 years, and live to be up to 80 years
old.

**Size.** Island orcs stand 8 feet tall on average and are corded with powerful

Highly spiritual clans of island folk, rugged explorers who long ago proved themselves against the beasts of the monstrous world.

Kotenoei


# Meneileian

Meneileians, who derive their name from the forested continent, Meneilas, are
identical to humans in most regards. An ancient people with a strong oral
tradition, Meneileians believe that they were long ago taken in and domesticated
by the great trees of the Veghrinaad forest. The Meneileians worship the trees
of the great forest, making dwellings high atop the boughs, or else fashioning
powerful, sturdy dwellings and ships from timber reverently etched in sacred
designs to commemorate their sacrifice.

Long ago, when the floods came and the towers were first fashioned, the
Eruvenian armies invited the Meneileians to take refuge with the sky people.
Some accepted, but many more chose to stay on Meneilas. The oral tradition of
the Meneileians then goes on to attribute their survival to the tree cities and
their overall adherence to a druidic religion which they call the Old Ways.

## Ancient Human Ancestral Traits

Ancient humans were born soon after the first of the forest gods. They were
invented, and then domesticated by, the tree spirits, in order to act as
guardians and a servant people. As an ancient human you have the following
traits.

**Age.** Ancient humans mature and have a life span similar to humans, save that
they seem to age slower after their thirties.

**Size.** Ancient humans typically range from 5 to 7 feet in height, with a
broad frame. Your size is Medium.

**Speed.** Your speed is 30 feet.

**The Old Way.** Ancient humans have a strange and ancient bond with the natural
world, giving you proficiency with Nature and Survival checks. In addition, you
have proficiency with an artisan tool of your choice.

**Treespeaker.** You have a strange rapport with the trees, giving you an
advantage on Perception and Insight checks whenever you are within 60 feet of a
natural forest.


The stalwart people of the ancient age, Meneileians believe they were once domesticated by the great titanic trees of the ancient Veghrinaad forest.

# Qeruborim

The architects of the Hanging Towers, and originators of the ley sciences, the
three-eyed people known as the Qeruborim have long held a reputation as a
clandestine but wise culture of mystics. In the last age, they held great temple
cities in the spires and peaks of ancient mountains, and they would stay in
their keeps in reclusion for centuries, ignoring wars and other strife of the
surface folk, by and large, only to emerge in key moments and either to assuage
some potential conflict or to share a cryptic omen or foretelling.

It is known that a Qeruborim seldom shares their mystic acumen without reason,
and so the traditional response to a Qeruborim interlocuter is one of deference
and respect. So it was that when a Qeruborim cabal would arrive in a given
conflict, that conflict would actually be suspended and the mystic foretellings
of the Qeruborim would be heeded as requisite advice. The last time the
Qeruborim entourage was ignored, the monstrous gods awoke.

Today, the Qeruborim have redesigned their culture to embrace their role in the
Epicentral Empire, as the facilitators and engineers of the great ley engines of
the Spinning Cage. Most of the Tower Majestries, the sects of magi who keep the
Towers aloft, are directly influenced by societies of Qeruborim. It's safe to
say that without their knack with the mystic arts and ley engineering, the war
with the monstrous divine could have worked out very differently.

## Hallow Dwarf Ancestral Traits

**Age.** Hallow dwarves mature at the same rate as humans, but they’re
considered young until they reach the age of 50. On average, they live about 350
years.

**Size.** Hallow dwarves are less stocky than their dwarven cousins, but around
the same height and with beards just as thick. You are Medium.

**Speed.** Your walking speed is 25 feet. Your speed is not reduced by wearing
heavy armor.
